Album: Singapop by Dick Lee
Once upon a time, in 1965
Singapore took a great big dive
No one came to lend a hand
We stood tall and kept our stand 4
Then came the problem one by one
They all added up to hundreds of ones
Top of the list was the high birth rate
‘Cos the number of children was just too great 8
So came Mr Lee Kuan Yew
Who told us we must stop at two
With all the info in his hands
He told his men 12
“Sit down and plan”
- They were the *SFPB -
Abortions were legalised
Childbirth was minimised 16
Women who were wise
They sterilised
Those who didn’t were penalised
As the years went by, birth rates declined 20
Problems vanished from people’s minds
Then came the government with a policy
“Now it’s time to move on to three!”
The reason for this drastic fixation 24
Was the ageing population
So women bore and bore
And children became more and more
Now for the 90’s modern life 28
People’s families, so small size
Honours, Masters, phDs
They feel that kids mean more school fees
So here comes Mr Goh Chok Tong 32
“Three or more and you won’t go wrong”
So people say, “Let’s heed the advice”
Dragon babies all arrive
Kids number 1, 2 and 3 36
Kiasu, Kiasi, Kiaseemi!
Parents queue up for primary schools
Camp at school with all their tools
After 30 years of independence 40
Into stage three we make our entrance
In 2030, we’ll be a great new nation
A country with OPTIMUM POPULATION!
